Last fall, we launched the Community Yard Tree Giveaway Program, an exciting new TreePhilly initiative that empowers community groups to help restore Philadelphia’s urban forest – starting in their own back yards. The effort was a huge success. We gave out five grants, and our grantees in turn gave out over 300 free yard trees to Philadelphians – exceeding our goal of 250 by more than 20%.
The community-based giveaways were so successful that we are expanding the program this spring! In addition to hosting three citywide yard tree giveaways (to be announced soon!), we will provide seven grants to community groups and local businesses to host giveaways in their neighborhoods this April and May.
Grant recipients will have the opportunity to provide 50 or 100 fruit trees, flowering trees, and shade trees to their constituents and will receive $500 as well as event planning and educational support from TreePhilly. Only not-for-profit organizations are eligible to receive the $500 award, but all community groups and businesses that serve Philadelphians – including civic associations, community development corporations, nonprofits, schools, faith-based organizations, and local businesses – are encouraged to apply.
So what does this mean for you? Well, if you’re a member of a community group or local business, it means you have the opportunity to provide an exciting new resource to your constituents, expand your brand, and get $500. If you’re a citizen, it means you’ll have at least ten opportunities to pick up a free tree for your yard this spring!
And for all of us, it means Philadelphia really is the City of Arborly Love.
Grant applications are due Friday, February 13. For more info, check out the application, shoot us an email at [email protected], or call (215) 683-0233. To check out our Fall 2014 grantees, click here.
