Requests must come from the property owner. If you are a renter or tenant, please work with your landlord to submit a request.
The Street Tree Inspector for your neighborhood will visit your property to check out your sidewalk and determine if there’s enough room for a tree while leaving room for ADA accessibility, a buffer around your utilities, and other public safety considerations. If your property is approved, the inspector will select an appropriate species for your space based on sidewalk width, overhead wires, underground utilities, shade from existing trees and other considerations. The inspector will leave an owner permission form in your mailbox. If your property is not approved, the inspector will leave a note explaining why.
This is a crucial step! We cannot put your property on a planting list until we receive your signed permission form. If there isn’t an existing tree pit in your sidewalk, we’ll cut one for you. We’ll also remove stumps if there is an existing pit. You can help us streamline this process by making sure your tree pit or sidewalk is clear of debris, fencing, etc. and reporting any existing stumps or standing dead trees during your request.
After receiving your signed OPF, we’ll place your tree on a planting list for the next planting season available. Planting will occur anywhere from 6-18 months after we received your signed permission form. In Philadelphia, the tree planting seasons generally run from April 15 – June 15 and October – November 15, but often changes based on conditions.

Our Street Tree Management team will select an appropriate tree species for you based on sidewalk width, overhead wires, underground utilities, shade from existing trees and other considerations. Our motto is “Right tree, right place.” Many of the species we plant are native to Southeastern Pennsylvania or are species that perform well in urban settings. You can check out our list of approved street trees here.
