Fall 2014 Grantees Berachah Baptist Church and PURC

Last fall, we launched the Community Yard Tree Giveaway Program, an exciting new TreePhilly initiative that empowers community groups to help restore Philadelphia’s urban forest – starting in their own back yards. The effort was a huge success. We gave out five grants, and our grantees in turn gave out over 300 free yard trees to Philadelphians – exceeding our goal of 250 by more than 20%.

The community-based giveaways were so successful that we are expanding the program this spring! In addition to hosting three citywide yard tree giveaways (to be announced soon!), we will provide seven grants to community groups and local businesses to host giveaways in their neighborhoods this April and May.

Six Winter Tree Care Tips!

Winter – which brings drought, toxic de-icing salts, and extra weight in the form of snow and ice – can be a dangerous time for city trees. Although they are dormant in winter, trees still benefit from little extra TLC during these cold and snowy months! Here are a few tips to help you and your arborly friends make it to spring.

Parker will receive nearly $300 worth of gardening supplies donated by Primex Garden Center in Glenside.

Second place went to Laura Jamieson’s story about her family’s plum tree, and honorable mentions went to Katharine Novak, Leslie Willis-Lowry, and Dr. Don Stoltz.
