Arbor Day

Celebrating the importance of trees

Children help plant a tree during a 1991 Arbor Day celebration with the Fairmount Park mascot, Francis Percival Frog.

Arbor Day is an internationally celebrated holiday that recognizes the importance of trees. On this day, people plant new trees, care for existing trees, and educate each other on the role of trees in our lives. In the majority of the United States, Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April.

The Arbor Day Foundation was founded in 1972, one hundred years after J. Sterling Morton celebrated the first Arbor Day by planting 1 million trees across the state of Nebraska. Since it was founded, the Arbor Day Foundation has become the largest nonprofit membership organization dedicated to planting trees, and engages in many different programs to green communities across the country.

The Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program began in 1976 as an effort to increase the number of trees in cities and towns across the country. The City of Philadelphia has received the Tree City USA distinction from the Arbor Day Foundation every year since the program began, meaning that each year since 1976, Philadelphia has:

  • Maintained a tree board or department
  • Had a community tree ordinance
  • Spent at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and
  • Celebrated Arbor Day!

  • Arbor Day 2017

Mayor Jim Kenney proclaimed Friday April 28th, 2017 to be Arbor Day in the City of Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, Fairmount Park Conservancy and TD Bank partnered with local and national organizations to celebrate urban trees on Arbor Day at Philadelphia’s historic Wissinoming Park. Dozens of arborists from Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, Bartlett Tree Experts, and the Pennsylvania Delaware Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture climbed and pruned the many large trees in the 42 acre park. Volunteers from TreePhilly’s sponsor TD Bank helped to water and care for newly planted trees, and local school students participated in many fun activities to learn about tree care and tree identification.
